Financial transparency

Where the money goes.

An honest accounting from a small, all-volunteer nonprofit in Springfield, Illinois — what we are, what we file with the IRS, and where every gift to the wall is spent.

A note on our scale

A small all-volunteer 501(c)(3).

Springfield Angel of Hope, NFP is a volunteer-run public charity with annual gross receipts under $50,000. That places us in the smallest tier of registered nonprofits, which means we file IRS Form 990-N — the e-Postcard — each year rather than the longer Form 990 or 990-EZ that larger organizations file.

That filing tier is the reason Charity Navigator and Candid list our organization as registered but do not issue a star rating or a detailed financial breakdown — the underlying line-item data simply isn't required of organizations at our size, and so it isn't in their pipeline. We publish this page so the people who give, walk, and remember with us know exactly what that means, and where their gifts go.

Where gifts go

Every gift holds the site.

Donations support four ongoing costs, in roughly this order of magnitude:

Site maintenance and landscaping. The statue and Memorial Wall sit on land within the City of Springfield's Washington Park Botanical Garden. The Garden tends the broader grounds; we tend the walls, the walkway, the plantings around the statue, and any repairs that the original 2008 construction or the 2017 expansion calls for.

Memorial Wall engraving. Every family name added to the wall is engraved by a stonecutter. The original wall reached capacity in 2016, and the October 2017 expansion added two additional walls and a new walkway. Engraving continues whenever a family submits a name.

Annual ceremony materials. Candles, programs, sound, and seating for the December 6 Candlelight Remembrance Ceremony, and the route, sound, and supplies for A Walk to Remember on the first Saturday of October.

Hospital-partner contributions. Proceeds from A Walk to Remember are shared each year with St. John's SHARE and Memorial's Pastoral Care — two Springfield hospital programs that walk with bereaved families directly, in the rooms where loss happens.

The organization has no employees and no paid staff. Every role — board, ceremony hosts, walk coordinators, wall stewards — is filled by a volunteer.

Independent verification

Where to look us up.

Four public databases list our organization. We link out so that the people considering a gift can verify our status independently — not just take our word for it.

Looking ahead

If we ever grow past the threshold.

The IRS requires organizations with gross receipts over $50,000 to file the longer Form 990-EZ, which discloses revenue, expenses, and program detail line by line. If Springfield Angel of Hope ever crosses that threshold, we will publish a fuller financial report on this page within the same fiscal year. Until then, the page above is the complete picture — there is no second set of books we're not showing you.

If you'd like to help expand what we can offer at the site — additional wall capacity, larger ceremony footprint, or larger contributions to our hospital partners — a gift goes directly to that work.
